Manipur: 12-Hour Strike In Naga-Inhabited Areas Completely Paralyses Normal Life

IMPHAL: The 12 hours total shutdown on Monday called by the United Naga Council (UNC) in all the Naga-inhabited areas of Manipur in protest against the brutal murder of Lucy Mairem at Keibi Heikak Mapal on July 15 severely disrupted normal life in Noney and Tamenglong District .

All business establishments and institutions like schools, colleges, banks, markets and business establishments remained shut. All kinds of vehicles, private and commercial, including local taxi services were completely kept off the road along NH-37( Imphal - Jiribam Road), Bishnupur - Khoupum - Rengpang Road, Tamenglong - Khongshang Road and in I.T. Road.

The killing of a Maring Naga woman and mutilation of her face on July 15 by armed miscreants was strongly condemned by the United Naga Council (UNC) at Sawombung in Imphal East district.

The UNC issued a press release in which the apex Manipur Naga body stated its shock and anger at the report of the cold-blooded murder of one Lucy Marem, who was aged about 57 and a resident of Beaulahram village, Pallel, Chandel district, who was shot dead in the evening of July 15 at Sawombung (Ukhrul road), Imphal East district by armed miscreants.

The UNC called the strike in condemnation of the incident, calling for a 12-hour shutdown that began at 6 am and ended at 6 pm today in all Manipur-Naga areas.

It is also pertinent to mention here that following the incident, a case was also registered regarding the incident immediately at Lamlai Police Station.

Soon after the case was filed, the police conducted an investigation in this connection, during the course of which Imphal East police conducted raids at different places, leading to the arrest of as many as nine people while some significant seizures were also made.

After their arrest, all the accused persons were produced before the duty magistrate, Imphal East, and were remanded into seven days of police custody, which will last till July 22, 2023, for further investigation into the circumstances leading to the dastardly incident.
